I've spent most of my life involved with graphic design and the media production process. I've had the pleasure of working with some of the best graphic designers and art directors in the country over a period that has spanned four decades.
As a young boy I often walked through the Omaha office of Bozell and Jacobs Advertising in awe, studying each detail of the art and media departments, watching graphic artists at work, and occasionally lending a hand on multimedia projects. My dad, Galen Lillethorup, was a creative director, copywriter and TV producer at Bozell. I was particularly interested in photography and multimedia slide shows, which makes sense when you consider my later career in photography and video production. Learning the fine points of this industry from your father is something to be thankful for. Dad, you are very good at what you do. Your generation is truly the greatest generation. I have the utmost respect for you and your good friends from your years at KMTV, Bozell & Jacobs and Galen & nellie.
My dad’s brother, Duane Kragh Lillethorup, was a renowned graphic artist and talented fine artist in his own right. Several times I had the opportunity to work with uncle Kragh on print and video projects. There were many lessons learned from his years of excellent work and wisdom. Kragh held several distinguished positions in his lifetime including director of art and design at Walt Disney in both California and Florida locations. Uncle Kragh we miss you.
Early in my career I also had the good fortune to work at the American Bicycle Association as a photographer and editor of two national publications. Along with those titles came the job of layout and design. These were the days of primitive linotype machines - printing out one column of type at a time, wax and paste-up boards, t-squares and shooting half-tones on a stat camera. The lessons learned about typography, page layout and image quality were in some ways more meaningful when each page was assembled by hand.
Later I worked in advertising where learning about graphic design really got interesting. Galen & Nellie Advertising was THE advertising and design hot shop of Omaha, Nebraska in the 1980’s. The agency racked up hundreds of awards throughout a decade that ushered in desktop publishing and design, along with the introduction of Apple Macintosh systems. We were the first Omaha agency to use Macs for production and it became my job to learn how to use them. This effort would become the catalyst for my increased interest in layout and design. Our design team at Galen & nellie was the best I have ever seen before or since. Many of the award winning art directors from this team are still at work, winning awards in Omaha and other top markets.
